red dun

alezan dun

Description

Base coat with unrestricted red pigment. Body, mane, and tail are all the same golden-orange shade, ranging from pale gold to dark copper. One of the most common coat colors in horses.

Visual traits

Uniformly chestnut-gold body and mane · No black pigment · Brown eyes

Genetic basis

Extension e/e — the MC1R gene in double recessive prevents black pigment production.

The Dun gene dilutes the base coat and adds primitive wild-horse markings: a dorsal stripe along the spine, leg barring, and sometimes shoulder stripes.
