Description

Near-black to very dark brown coat, almost indistinguishable from true black to the naked eye. One Cream gene copy on a black base produces minimal dilution, sometimes perceptible as a slight brownish sheen in sunlight.

Visual traits

Near-black to very dark brown body · Nearly indistinguishable from true black · DNA testing recommended

Genetic basis

Extension E/-, Agouti a/a, Cream nCr — Cream has nearly invisible effect on a black base.

The Dun gene dilutes the base coat and adds primitive wild-horse markings: a dorsal stripe along the spine, leg barring, and sometimes shoulder stripes.

The Frame Overo pattern adds irregular white patches to the base coat. Crossing two Frame horses is dangerous: 25% of foals will be homozygous O/O (OLWS) and will not survive.
