Description

Pattern of irregular white patches on a colored coat, with a colored "frame" remaining on the back. Patches typically invade the belly and sides but leave the back intact. This pattern is associated with lethal OLWS syndrome when homozygous.

Visual traits

Irregular white patches · Back often retains color · Blue eyes common · OLWS if O/O

Genetic basis

Frame Overo O/o — the EDNRB gene produces white patches; homozygous O/O = non-viable white foal (OLWS).

The Dun gene dilutes the base coat and adds primitive wild-horse markings: a dorsal stripe along the spine, leg barring, and sometimes shoulder stripes.
