in this cross
Description
Red-brown to mahogany body with black mane, tail, and lower legs ("points"). The Agouti gene restricts black pigment to the extremities. The most common coat color in domestic horses.
Visual traits
Red-brown body · Black mane, tail, and lower legs · Brown eyes
Genetic basis
Extension E/- and Agouti A/- — the ASIP gene confines black melanin to the extremities.
The Dun gene dilutes the base coat and adds primitive wild-horse markings: a dorsal stripe along the spine, leg barring, and sometimes shoulder stripes.
